KSS Honored at AIA Pennsylvania Awards
There were 156 projects entered in the 2024 Architectural Excellence Design Awards by 56 firms from across Pennsylvania and we are honored that the Remy Theatre has been awarded the Honor Award, Preservation Architecture and Grand Street Settlement, Community Center Renovation has been awarded the Merit Award, Impact Design Award.
The Remy Theatre is an adaptive reuse of a 1930s-built open-air theatre. Restored and relocated to Sarah Lawrence College in 2018, the Remy Theatre serves as a 200+ seat public venue for outdoor theatre, dance and musical performances, literary readings, lectures, and social gatherings. Influenced by precedents of gardens and amphitheaters that sinuously weave earth, stone, and natural features, the project uses the geometry of the original theatre as a fulcrum; its composition and construction were intimately tied to the sculptural craftsmanship of the tiers as they linked together to form an arc focused on the stage and embedded in the slope of Lia Fail. The new Remy Theatre layout uses the geometrical point of origin and stretches apart the tiers, weaving stones with hill and grass interspersed, intertwining earth, stone, and natural features.
Building New York communities and empowering its neighbors since 1916, Grand Street Settlement renovated its 80 Pitts location to expand its space and better provide for myriad New Yorkers who walk through its doors daily.
KSS Architects infused transparency, flexibility, and infusion of daylight into our design and transformed this Brutalist building into an integrated hub for multi-generational community programs, including senior services, childcare, and youth programs.
Through the AIA Pennsylvania Architectural Excellence Awards programs, upwards of 50 awards and recognitions are presented annually to firms and individuals across Pennsylvania for excellence in design, contributions to the profession of architecture, and commitment to the quality of the built environment.
