The Opportunity
KSS worked with Seton Hall University (SHU) to transform the library basement into a dynamic showcase for technology and the maker space. By maximizing the existing space, we created an open, engaging environment that highlights hands-on learning and innovation. The existing Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center (TLTC) was closed off, windowless, and felt isolated from the rest of the library. KSS welcomed the challenge of opening the space while strengthening the TLTC’s connection to the rest of the library and the broader campus.
Our Approach
Inspired by SHU’s innovative programs, KSS' design fosters transparency, engagement, and connectivity. Our team proposed replacing existing opaque walls with glass to enhance visibility and transparency. A welcoming “front porch” was introduced at the TLTC entrance, featuring warm wood accents, a new IT support “genius bar,” and an open study lounge.
Vision glass was utilized in the adjacent maker space and audio recording booths, allowing students to see the action from the lounge. Connectivity and wayfinding were improved by adding a new basement-level main entrance and opening an existing enclosed stairway. The result is a vibrant, functional environment that enhances the student experience and showcases technology in action.
