the opportunity

BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions engaged KSS to evaluate the relocation of its Catalysts division from leased space to an existing company-owned facility. The feasibility analysis considered logistics, cost, sustainability, and the specialized requirements of chemical research and testing. Following the study, BASF moved forward with the consolidation, transforming approximately 30,000 square feet to accommodate chemical research, reactor testing laboratories, catalyst preparation and production, specialized laboratory support, and workplace functions.

Our Approach

The renovation integrated new programs and personnel into an occupied facility while supporting a broader shift in workplace culture. Open laboratory and office layouts encourage greater visibility and connection, while shared break rooms, huddle rooms, and communal spaces create opportunities for colleagues across disciplines to exchange ideas. These supportive environments also promote employee wellbeing and help the facility feel welcoming to its diverse workforce. Color, imagery, and finishes drawn from BASF’s visual identity bring energy and cohesion to the workplace.

KSS also helped BASF reconsider the arrival experience. Visitors previously entered through a remote security entrance, while the building’s historic main entrance remained unused. Restoring this entrance established a more intuitive and elevated front door for the consolidated operations. Expanded exterior glazing, a metal canopy, new sidewalks, planters, and benches create a welcoming porch-like setting. Inside, a custom security desk and display case meet operational needs while reinforcing BASF’s identity from the moment employees and visitors arrive.
