The Opportunity
Since the early 1900s, Corona has welcomed generations of immigrants, and in the 1960s, the first Food Bazaar supermarket opened, quickly becoming an anchor of the community by offering international foods and serving as a local gathering space. Additionally, the market’s cultural role has deepened over time, hosting events like the Queens Night Market. Now, it will become a vital part of the upcoming mixed-use, multi-family project on the same site.
Our Approach
KSS is working with Shorewood Real Estate Group to revitalize the site with a new, six-story, mixed-use building that expands the existing supermarket and adds residential units above. The goal is to create a “modern neighborhood grocery” that continues to serve the community while addressing current housing and lifestyle needs through inclusive, responsible development. The design is rooted in connectivity, diversity, and wellness. Residential units will range in size and promote well-being with access to natural light and generous open space like the rooftop garden. Fronting three unique streets lined with both low- and high-rise buildings, the design will engage each thoughtfully. A welcoming pedestrian experience will be prioritized through careful sidewalk and entry design, while vehicular flow will be planned to minimize disruption to the existing neighborhood as density increases. This redevelopment reflects the area’s cultural legacy while bringing a fresh, modern vision to one of Queens’ most dynamic and diverse communities.
