The Opportunity

Osmo uses AI to further innovation in olfactory technology, and they needed a home to support their human and non-human workers which incorporated workplace, chemical laboratories, warehouse, and manufacturing spaces. Our design was inspired by the concept of “concentrated mixing” and takes inspiration from scent science. By focusing on areas of social mixing and transparency of space, we set out to facilitate a balanced workplace that captures technological innovation, enables fragrance exploration, and supports the client’s rapid growth and future-focused identity. As part of the client’s focus on the future, the space is designed to be adaptable, with a potential for expansion, as their needs and technologies evolve.

Our Approach

The design engages the human senses through tactile fabrics, natural wood, and maximum daylight. Organic materials and patterns balance the existing industrial concrete structure on site. The project features a walking path along Newark Bay with open views toward the water and leverages existing windows to bring daylight deeper into interior spaces through transparency. The lighting is strategically designed to evoke a sense of dissipated scent molecules in the open ceilings in contrast to concentrated and directional zones in labs and manufacturing spaces. Osmo’s technology is at the forefront of digitizing the sense of smell to improve human health and well-being. This facility showcases the innovation behind their research while prioritizing future flexibility and human wellness.
