the opportunity

First Round Capital empowers the dreamers and doers of the world by equipping startups with access to key resources, connections, and the space to perform. When First Round Capital decided to relocate to the University City neighborhood of Philadelphia, the company was in search of a nontraditional space befitting its own unique mission and culture.

Our Approach

The venture fund found what it wanted at 4040 Locust Street, the former home to the first Urban Outfitters’ store and later a bowling alley and restaurants. To showcase the building’s character and create an open and flexible work environment, the KSS team gutted the interior, punching out windows and exposing brick and steel. Co-locating established companies with “drop-in entrepreneurs,” the new office features incubator space for fledgling companies, a large common area with a cafe kitchen and movable seating to foster collaboration and impromptu inspiration, and technology-rich meeting rooms, offices, and organized workstations. Beyond a corporate office, First Round Capital’s new home has become a valuable resource for Philadelphia’s tech community.
